Mandya (
Kannada: ಮಂಡ್ಯ)is a city in
Mandya District in
Karnataka state of
India. Mandya is 40 km from
Mysore and 100 km from
Bangalore.
The name comes from a sage Maandavya. Hence it is also called Maandavya Nagara. Mandya is known for the "Gowda" community of people from the Vokkaliga Hindu religion. There is also a sect in Ayyangar Brahmins called Mandyam Ayyangars who are said to hail from Mandya.
Geography
Mandya is located at . It has an average elevation of 678
metres (2224
feet).
The district is home to the famous Brindavan Gardens, at the Krishna Raja Sagar reservoir, The Shivana Samudram waterfalls with their hydroelectricity generation plant (first hydroelectric plant in Asia), Srirangapatna (capital city of Tipu Sultan), and the Melukote temple. The Cauvery River is the main water source of Mandya, through the Krishna Raja Sagar reservoir. Rice and sugarcane are the main crops.

Narendraswamy (now he is minister for Women and Child Development), K.R. Pet- K.B. Chandrashekhar, Nagamangala- Suresh Gowda, Melukote- C.S. Puttaraju and Srirangapattana- Ramesh babu.
Rivers
Mandya District has five important rivers, Kaveri River and its four tributories Hemavathi, Shimsha, Lokapavani, Veeravaishnavi.[1]

As of 2001 India
census, Mandya had a population of 131,211. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Mandya has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of
59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 68%. In Mandya, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Mandya city is also place
Peoples Education Society College of Engineering popularly known as PESCE one of the top engineering college in the region and also the degree and diploma courses in bharathi nagar and a It also houses lush green cricket stadium of international standards and also the degree and diploma courses in bharathi nagar.
Karnataka government also started a Medical college recently in Mandya. It was one of the first by
Karnataka government in decades.
Keonics computer center an Government of Karnataka organization is providing Computer Education for rural and unemployed youth at lower price.
Economy
The Mysore Sugar Company Ltd.) is located in the heart of Mandya City. It is one of the oldest
sugar factories to be setup in
Karnataka. It has a processing capacity of 5,000 tons of
cane per day and was established
1933-
1934.
The headquarters of the company is in Bangalore.
Politics
Mandya is known very well for its Politics. It has given many seasoned politicians to the Karnataka/Indian politics including the famed Chief minister of Karnataka Shri. S.M. Krishna.
Sight seeing
Explore the island fortress at Srirangapatna, built by Tipu Sultan, Tiger of Mysore, just 25 km from Mandya. Sriranganatha Temple is famous for the idol of Lord Vishnu in a sleeping posture on the Great Snake, Anantha. Visit Ganjam where the mortal remains of Tipu Sultan and his parents were laid to rest. See the beautiful ivory inlay on the doors and the exquisite architecture of the building. Just 4 km from Srirangapatna, set on 6 small islets on the Cauvery river is the Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary, a favourite haunt of bird lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. Don?t miss the well laid Brindavan Gardens in Srirangapatna on the banks of the Krishna Raja Sagar dam. Boating is available here while musical fountains and beautiful illumination makes it stand out.
The beautiful Shivanasamudra falls are located 60 km from Mandya. The river Cauvery falls from a great height and two separate falls are created, known as Gaganachukki and Bharachukki. Kokkrebellur is 40 km from Mandya and is home to migratory birds in October and November. You can watch painted cranes, spot billed pelicans and other variety of birds in their natural habitat. About 35 km is Melkote where the ancient Cheluvanarayanaswamy and Yoganarasimhaswamy temples are worth a visit.
