Liverpool West Derby (UK Parliament constituency)

Liverpool West Derby is a borough constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.

The constituency is one of five covering the city of Liverpool. It covers the north-east of the city, including Croxteth as well as West Derby itself.

Boundary review

Following their review of parliamentary representation in Merseyside, the Boundary Commission for England has created a modified West Derby constituency, which will be first fought at the next general election.

Their original proposal to create a cross-border "Croxteth and Kirkby" seat (which would have contained with electoral wards from Knowsley borough, as well as from Liverpool) was dropped following public consultation. The electoral wards used in the modified West Derby constituency are:

  • Croxteth, Knotty Ash, Norris Green, Tuebrook and Stoneycroft, West Derby and Yew Tree

The seat can be considered a safe seat for the Labour Party, with them having been victorious in every general election since 1964. However, in the early 1980s it was briefly held by the Social Democratic Party after the sitting Labour MP Eric Ogden defected. Labour regained the seat at the 1983 general election, when the current MP Bob Wareing first took office.

Prior to 1964, it was held by the Conservatives, although their share of the vote has declined considerably; so much so that in the 2005 general election they finished in fourth place.

The seat was notable in the general elections of 1997 and 2001 for being the only constituency in England in which a minor party came second, namely the Liberal Party. In the 2005 election, however, the Liberals were pushed into third place by the Liberal Democrats.

The Labour Party has selected Stephen Twigg, previously member of parliament for Enfield Southgate, as the Labour Co-operative candidate for the next general election in place of Bob Wareing who failed to be reselected. Bob Wareing has stated he will contest the seat as an Labour Independent candidate.. The UK Independence Party have selected Hilary Jones as their candidate.
