Levine was born in Rockingham, North Carolina and did his undergraduate work at Duke University.

Leon, along with his wife Sandra Levine (née Poliakoff) , have been involved in numerous charitable and philanthropic causes, donating money to local projects in Charlotte and the surrounding region (See "Philanthropy" section below.)

He and his wife currently reside in Charlotte, North Carolina.
