Upper Silesian Coal Basin

Upper Silesian Coal Basin (Górnośląskie Zagłębie Węglowe, GZW) is a coal basin in Silesia, mostly in Poland but also partly in the Czech Republic (the Ostrava-Karviná Coal Basin). It also contains a number of other minable resources (methane, cadmium, lead, silver and zinc).

Location and population centers

The Upper Silesian Coal Basin lies in the historical regions of Upper Silesia and Zagłębie Dąbrowskie in southern Poland, in a highland located between the upper Vistula and the upper Oder rivers, as well as extending into the Moravian-Silesian Region in the Czech Republic. The Czech part of USCB is also known as the Ostrava-Karviná Coal Basin.

The Upper Silesian Coal Basin is centered around Katowice in the Silesian Voivodeship. It contains the adjoining metropolitan areas of Upper Silesian Industry Area and Rybnik Coal Region in Poland and the metropolitan region around Ostrava in the Czech Republic.
