Kimch'aek, formerly
Sŏngjin (성진), is a city in
North Hamgyong Province,
North Korea. The
population is 196,000. The city received its current name during the
Korean War, in
1951, in honor of recently deceased
KPA general,
Kim Chaek. It is an important port on the
Sea of Japan (East Sea of Korea), and home to an
ironworks.
