Kaneohe Bay

Kaneohe Bay

Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, on the east coast of Oahu, protected by coral reefs and dotted with islands. The shores of the bay are rimmed with ancient fishponds built by the Hawaiian chiefs. A U.S. marine corps air facility and the headquarters of all U.S. marine operations in Hawaii are on the Mokapu Peninsula bordering the bay.

Naval Air Station Kaneohe Bay in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii was a primary target in the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was attacked seven minutes ahead of Pearl Harbor and again an hour later in order to obtain air superiority for the Japanese. Hangar #1 and the seaplane ramps survived the attacks and are still extant today. The facility was repurposed to the United States Marine Corps in 1951 and renamed to Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
