KBKS-FM

KBKS-FM (106.1 FM), better known as "106.1 KISS FM", is a radio station in the Seattle, Washington, area that plays current popular (Top 40 Mainstream) music. The CBS Corporation outlet broadcasts at 106.1 MHz with an ERP of 55 kW and is licensed to Tacoma, Washington.

History

Prior to its flip to their current format in 1997, the station was best known for their three previous formats: hard rock as KLAY-FM during the 1970s, country as KRPM (during the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s) and Rhythmic Adult Contemporary in 1996, the latter where the KBKS calls and KISS 106.1 moniker were a holdover from.

At first KBKS' direction leaned more towards Modern Rock as a way to counter KUBE's Rhythmic Top 40 direction, but since then it has broaden up its direction by embracing more R&B/Hip-Hop tracks in the hopes to dent KUBE's dominant ratings in the Seattle Top 40 wars. As of July 2008, in the last Arbitron Ratings, KBKS's ratings have gone up from a 3.1 to a 3.6 in the ratings placing at #9 behind KZOK-FM (Classic Rock) but still beating stations such as KKWF-FM (Country). It's adding more recurrents rather than focusing on new music which is making their station rise up back into the Top 10 in the arbitron ratings.
