James Simpkins

James "Jim" Simpkins was a Canadian cartoonist and artist. He worked for many years with the National Film Board before launching a successful freelancing career in Toronto. His rich career included work for Hudson’s Bay Company, book illustration, cartoons to numerous publications in Canada and the US and even designing a postage stamp.

However, his most famous character was Jasper the Bear which appeared for over 20 years in Maclean’s magazine. Extremely popular across Canada it became the symbol for Jasper National Park in Alberta.

James Simpkins passed away on Feb 1st 2004 at the age of 93.
