Investec Bank

Investec plc (and ) is an international specialist banking group providing a diverse range of financial products and services. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and the JSE Securities Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index.

History

The Company was established as a leasing company in 1974 in Johannesburg and acquired a banking license in 1980. The Company was first listed on the JSE Securities Exchange in South Africa in 1986.

In 1998 Investec acquired Guinness Mahon, a leading London based merchant bank, and Henderson Crosthwaite, its stockbroking arm, for £95m. It also bought Hambros plc, another London based merchant bank the same year.

In 2002 Investec became a dual-listed company with Investec plc (listed in London) and Investec Limited (listed in Johannesburg).

Operations

Investec operates primarily in South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Australia. It also has banking operations in Ireland, Switzerland, Mauritius, Guernsey and the United States. It operates five business units:

  • Property
