The
Independent University of Moscow (IUM) (Независимый Московский Университет (НМУ),
Nezavisimy Moskovski Universitet) is a small educational organisation with rather informal status located in
Moscow,
Russia. Organized in
1991 by a group of prominent Russian mathematicians with
Arnold (chairman) and
Novikov among them. It includes a
mathematics and a
theoretical physics department and a post-graduate school. Anyone can attend lectures and seminars and become a student after taking 3 exams. IUM is the only non-state college for preparation of professional mathematicians. IUM diploma is recognized by such authoritative mathematical institutions as
Steklov Institute of Mathematics,
Harvard and
Weizmann Institute.
IUM is the home of the Math in Moscow study abroad program, a one-semester course in mathematics and computer science. Students from America and Canada are eligible for the program, and courses are taught by Russian mathematicians in English.
