Igaratá is a municipality in the state of São Paulo in Brazil. The population in 2004 is 9,318 and the area is 294.51 km². The elevation is 745 m. This place name comes from the Tupi language.

Hidrography

Igaratá stands adjacent to a beautiful dam, where aquatic sports and fishery is common practic among the locals and tourists. The Jaguari Dam is big, and stands between many cities (São José dos Campos, Santa Isabel, Jacareí) in the São Paulo State.

Economy

Igaratá's economy is mainly based on agriculture, because of the fertile lands bordering the Jaguari Dam. Tourism is very important to the local economy, supporting handcraft work from the local people. Cattle are also very important, thanks to the endless grasslands of the São Paulo Highlands.
