Hypoallergenic dog breeds

Hypoallergenic dog breeds, are those breeds that are considered the most suitable for those who suffer from allergies. It's often thought that people who are sensitive to dogs are reacting to the dog hair. While shedding (see moult) can contribute to allergies, often people are sensitive to substances in the the dander (dead skin cells) and saliva.

Although all dogs produce dander to some degree, in so called 'hypoallergenic dogs', the amount is so small that very few people experience allergy symptoms when in contact with these breeds. However, no dog is completely 100% hypoallergenic, and different people react to different breeds.

Although some existing breeds are excellent choices such as Yorkshire terriers, a breed that has been around over 100 years. The recent trend of mixed breed, designer dogs do not make good choices as the dander is inconsistent in mixes (goldendoodle, labradoodle etc.); if you absolutely must have a designer breed choose a third generation puppy. Keep in mind it is best to purchase established breeds; try local breed rescues.

The best test to determine whether your allergies will be affected is to spend 20 minutes in a closed off and confined area with the dog (cars tend to work well). This is a simple test which can save the owner from heartbreak in the future.
