Hitchwiki is "a collaborative project to build a free guide for hitchhikers" . The project was started on April 14th 2005, was abandoned, then moved to Wikia, and in November 2006 it was moved to and relaunched as Hitchwiki. At the same time versions in other languages were started. As of August 2008 there are versions in 7 languages, English, Finnish, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian. The website makes use of the MediaWiki software and allows anonymous edits. It's possible to log in through OpenID. Database dumps of the articles are available for download.

In September 2008 the project reached 1000 articles in its English version . According to the Guardian it's part of an "internet-fueled revival" of hitchhiking .
