A hermaphrodite is an organism that has male and female reproductive organs. In the case of a human, this would mean that a hermaphrodite would have male genitals and female genitals. In other words, they would have a penis and a vagina at the same time. Although this is fairly uncommon and slightly disturbing to some, it is a natural part of life for some species, and hermaphroditism is necessary for some species to survive and reproduce. Hermaphroditism is most commonly found among invertebrate organisms; however, it can occur in other types of organisms as well. Recently, intersex has been used as a less offensive and more medical term instead of hermaphrodite in the case that it is referring to a human.
