Abu Jahl used to beat Zunairah severely; so did Umar before he embraced Islam. Before Umar ibn al-Khattab's conversion his harsh treatment of his convert slaves was well known.
One day Abu Jahl came to visit Umar. He took it upon himself to beat Zunairah. He beat her to such an extent that she lost her eye sight.
The Meccan polytheists used that misfortune as an excuse for stigmatizing her for embracing Islam. they said that she had lost her sight because of the curse of al-Lat and al-Uzza. She was asked to recant, but she remained steadfast in her faith in Islam.
They used to say to her:
But she would always say,
She prayed to Allah and ultimately recovered her sight.
Abu Bakr liberated Zunairah, her sister Umm Ubays and Zunairah's fellow captive Lubaynah. When it came to freeing believing slaves, Abu Bakr did not think twice about paying the huge sums demanded by their torturers.
