Hardcore tuning is an alternate tuning
for an electric guitar
. It is uncommon, but it is still used by hardcore
, and some metalcore
bands. The lowest four strings are tuned the same way as they would be in Drop C tuning
. The highest two strings, though, are tuned to A and B♭' or vice versa, depending on the guitarist's preference. The result is either C-G-C-F-A-B♭' or C-G-C-F-B♭'-A. This tuning allows the guitarist to create the harsh dissonance of the minor second interval.
