Gunderam Defense

The Gunderam Defense is a rarely-played chess opening starting with the moves:

1. Opening theory in chess/1. e4 Opening theory in chess/1. e4/1...e5

'''2. Opening theory in chess/1. e4/1...e5/2. Nf3 Opening theory in chess/1. e4/1...e5/2. Nf3/2...Qe7

It is named after the chess player Gerhard Gunderam . In Brazil it is sometimes called the Brazilian Defense or the Câmara Defense, in reference to the International Master and two-time Brazilian champion Hélder Câmara.

Although 2...Qe7 does answer the threat against Black's e-pawn, it interferes with the development of his dark-square bishop. One of the ideas behind this awkward queen move is to unbalance the game by castling queenside while white will castle kingside.

The Gunderam Defense is categorized under the ECO code C40.
