Gumma, prefecture (1990 pop. 1,966,287), 2,446 sq mi (6,335 sq km), central Honshu, Japan. Maebashi is the capital; other important cities are Isezaki, Kiryu, and Takasaki. The prefecture is mountainous and has many hot springs. Gumma's economy is based on the production of wheat and raw silk. Sulfur and manganese are also mined.
Gumma (or Guma) is both a medical term and the name of several different geographical entities:

  • Gumma (pathology) is a characteristic tissue nodule found in the tertiary stage of syphilis.
  • The Kingdom of Gumma (also spelled Guma) is a former kingdom in the Gibe region of Ethiopia.
  • Gumma is an alternative spelling of Gunma Prefecture in Japan.
  • Guma, China is a town in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region of China.
  • Guma, Georgia is a village in the Republic of Georgia.
  • Guma, India is a census town in the Indian state of West Bengal.
