Greg Robinson

Greg Robinson (born October 9, 1951 in Los Angeles, California) is the current head coach of the Syracuse University football team. Robinson was awarded the job in January 2005 after the firing of coach Paul Pasqualoni, who had been Syracuse's head coach since 1991. Robinson served as the co-defensive coordinator at University of Texas during the 2004 season. Prior to his role at Texas, he was defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs under Dick Vermeil. In all, Robinson has spent nearly 14 years working in the National Football League, with teams that included the Denver Broncos and the New York Jets.

Robinson's tenure as defensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos occurred during their Super Bowl (XXXII & XXXIII) seasons in 1997 and 1998. The Robinson led Broncos defense played superb during the 1998 playoff run. The Broncos defense held the Miami Dolphins scoreless in the divisional playoffs, allowed only a touchdown as a result of a fumble on the one yard line against the New York Jets in the AFC Championship Game, and then allowed a single touchdown to the Atlanta Falcons in the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl after the outcome was secure.

During his collegiate coaching career, Robinson was an assistant coach at California State University, Cal State Fullerton, UCLA and his alma mater, the University of the Pacific, in addition to his roles at both the University of Texas and Syracuse University.

The team under Robinson's tenure has been in a fundamental rebuilding stage, as several new assistants were also replaced upon Pasqualoni's departure. As such, Robinson has installed a new West Coast offense scheme, replacing the option run style of offense previously run by Pasqualoni, as well as new defensive schemes. The team and coaches all have stuggled during the transition, resulting in a 7-28 overall record, which is the lowest winning percentage in a three-year span for the program. Despite the unfavorable record, which has led to much controversy among fans and the local press, Syracuse University Athletic Director Daryl Gross had announced on November 28, 2007 that Robinson will return to coach the Orange for a fourth season in 2008. However, in a recent Daily Orange interview, Gross has hinted that perhaps the rebuilding stage has been longer than expected.

Robinson is often praised by the Syracuse community for his public speaking abilities. He attributes this success to his "hard work and dedication" at Harvey Mudd College where Robinson obtained a Masters degree in Oratory Arts.

Robinson is known to showcase a very positive attitude during press conferences. So much so, a comical term, "Gregism" was coined by Syracuse football fans in response to Robinson's oratory acrobatics. A Gregism being a vaguely positive phrase meant to dodge a reporters real question. Gregisms often contain the words flashed, osmosis, special or intensity. "Time will tell" and "fight the fight" are some other popular Gregisms.

Robinson graduated from Garces Memorial High School in Bakersfield, California; then attended and played at Bakersfield College, a junior college, before transferring to the University of Pacific.
