A 1970s musical group from Dominica. The band was started in West coast town of St. Joseph. The lead singer Jefferson "Jeff" Joseph and keyboard player McDonald "Markie" Prosper along with the other members were former students of the Dominica Grammar School and St Mary's Academy, hence the name Grammacks. The Grammacks along with Exile One were the originators of 1970s phenomenon, Cadence music. An up-tempo form of calypso sang mostly in Antillean Creole and French. This later inspired Zouk music popularized by Kassav in the 1980s.
Grammacks rose to prominence in the 1970s to the early 1980s with a Super Bowl performance to their credit. Creative differences and financial mismanagement caused the band to break up with many members pursuing individual solo projects. Jeff Joseph later formed Volt Face and Grammacks The New Generation. They headlined the first ever World Creole Music Festival in Dominica. Plans are currently being made for a Grammacks Reunion in 2010.
