Marshall began his career as a youth player at Rangers, but failed to make any first team appearances for the club. He went on to play for East Stirlingshire, East Fife and Falkirk before joining Celtic for £270,000 in 1991.
After over 7 years at Celtic Park, having made exactly 100 league appearances, he departed for Kilmarnock in 1998. After 5 years at Rugby Park, he moved to Motherwell in 2003 where he also joined the coaching staff before retiring in 2005.
He joined the Hibernian coaching staff in November 2005.
He was capped once by Scotland, against the United States in May 1992. Intriguingly his father, also a goalkeeper named Gordon, was capped at under-23 level by England. His younger brother Scott played as a defender with Arsenal, Southampton and Celtic.
