Glasgow is one of the eight electoral regions of the Scottish Parliament (Holyrood), which were created in 1999. Ten of the parliament's 73 first past the post constituencies are sub-divisions of the region and it elects seven of the 56 additional-member Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs). Thus it elects a total of 17 MSPs.

Constituencies and council areas

In terms of first past the post constituencies the region includes:

Constituency Map
  1. Glasgow Anniesland covers a north-western portion of Glasgow City.
  2. Glasgow Baillieston covers the north-eastern portion of Glasgow City.
  3. Glasgow Cathcart covers a southern portion of Glasgow City.
  4. Glasgow Govan covers a central-southern portion of Glasgow City.
  5. Glasgow Kelvin covers a central-western portion of Glasgow City.
  6. Glasgow Maryhill covers the north-western portion of Glasgow City.
  7. Glasgow Pollok covers a south-eastern part of Glasgow City.
  8. Glasgow Rutherglen covers a small south-eastern portion of Glasgow City and a northern portion of South Lanarkshire.
  9. Glasgow Shettleston covers a central-eastern portion of Glasgow City.
  10. Glasgow Springburn covers a north-eastern portion of Glasgow City.

The constituencies were created with the names and boundaries of Westminster constituencies, as existing in 1999. Scottish Westminster constituencies were mostly replaced with new constituencies in 2005. Holyrood constituencies were unaltered.

Nine of the constituencies are entirely within the Glasgow City council area. The Rutherglen constituency includes a north-eastern area of the South Lanarkshire council area. Also, although central with respect to the region and entirely within the city area, Shettleston is in the south-east of the city area, on its boundary with the South Lanarkshire area.

The South Lanarkshire area is otherwise divided between the Central Scotland and South of Scotland regions.

Council areas are as defined in 1996, and may be subject to change after the next Scottish Parliament election.
