Gies, William John, 1872-1956, American biological chemist, b. Reisterstown, Md., grad. Gettysburg College (B.S. 1893; Ph.D. Yale, 1897). He began teaching at Columbia in 1898 and served as secretary of the faculty of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (1905-21). He was instrumental in establishing the School of Dentistry at Columbia, and his negotiations led to the formation of the American Association of Dental Schools. Gies wrote many textbooks, contributed articles to scientific journals, and edited the Journal of Dental Research.
