Fabian, Saint, pope (236-50), a Roman; successor of St. Anterus and predecessor of St. Cornelius. He recast the ecclesiastical organization in Rome. Fabian was martyred under Decius. Feast: Jan. 20.

In astrology, it is the cusp day between Capricorn and Aquarius.

• 250 - Emperor Decius begins a widespread persecution of Christians in Rome. Pope Fabian was martyred. Afterwards the Donatist controversy over readmitting lapsed Christians disaffects many in North Africa.
