The Chronicle was always a broadsheet, from its inception right up until 8 October 1997, when it became a tabloid-sized paper. The newspaper concentrates on local news, largely human interest stories and sport. Circulation increases on Thursdays with the publication of a large jobs section.

is the sister publication of another North East newspaper The Journal
. The two papers complement each other with The Journal
being published in the morning and the Chronicle
in the afternoon and evening.
In 2007, the local free paper The Herald and Post was rebranded under the Chronicle banner, as Chronicle Extra.
