De Filippo, Eduardo, 1900-1984, Neapolitan playwright and actor. In his scores of plays he combined pathos and farce. Napoli milionaria (1946) depicts postwar Naples, riddled with ruins and black-market corruption; Filumena Marturano (1946) concerns a loving prostitute who coaxes her lover into marriage. Both plays were made into successful motion pictures, the latter entitled Matrimonio all'italiana (Marriage Italian-Style, 1964). Among De Filippo's other well-known plays is Il figlio di Pulcinella (1957). Most of his plays are collected in Cantata dei giorni pari and Cantata dei giorni dispari (4 vol., 1951-59).

Eduardo De Filippo, often called simply Eduardo (24 May, 1900 - 31 October 1984) was an Italian actor, playwright, screenwriter, author and poet. He is most well-known for his work in Neapolitan like Filumena Marturano, though he also directed numerous films in Italian such as Napoli Milionaria!.

Born in Naples, De Filippo began acting at the age of 5 and in 1932 formed a theater company with his brother Peppino and sister Titina. Peppino left the troupe in 1944 and Titina departed by the early 1950s. Eduardo starred in De Sica's L'oro di Napoli with Totò and Sophia Loren in 1954. His translation of Shakespeare's The Tempest into Neapolitan was published in 1982.

On 15 December 2007, BBC Radio 4 broadcast his 1959 play "Saturday, Sunday and Monday" (Sabato, domenica e lunedì) in English.

In 1981, De Filippo was appointed life senator of the Italian Republic. He died in Rome.
