Doncaster Cup

The Doncaster Cup, formerly known as the Doncaster Gold Cup, is a Group 2 flat horse race in the United Kingdom open to thoroughbreds which are three-years-old or above. It is run over a distance of 2 miles and 2 furlongs (3,621 metres) at Doncaster Racecourse, and it takes place annually during the St. Leger meeting in September.

First run in 1766, it is the oldest continuing regulated horse race in the world. In its early years it overshadowed the St. Leger Stakes, which is now considered to be Doncaster's leading race. Together with the 2 mile (3,219 m) Goodwood Cup and 2½ mile (4,023 m) Ascot Gold Cup, the Doncaster Cup is part of Britain's Stayers' Triple Crown for horses capable of running longer distances. Only six horses have ever swept the series; Le Moss is the only horse to do it twice. The first American-bred horse to win the Doncaster Cup was King's Courier in 1900, owned by Francis Egerton, 3rd Earl of Ellesmere.

The race was promoted to Group 2 status in 2003 having been previously contested at Group 3 level.

Petrizzo finished first in 1986 but was relegated to last place following a Stewards' Inquiry.
