Version 2.0

Version 2.0 is the second album by alternative rock group Garbage. It was released in worldwide in May 1998 and was the follow up to the band's multi-platinum debut album Garbage. Despite a slow start, Version 2.0 went on to equal its predecessor, becoming platinum-certified in many territories.

Like their first record, Garbage promoted Version 2.0 with a year-long tour, and by releasing a string of hit singles backed with boundary-pushing promotional videos. In 1999, Version 2.0 was nominated for Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Album, and its third single "Special" was further nominated the following year for Best Rock Song and for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group.

Building on framework sound and style Garbage established on their debut set, Version 2.0 featured musical references to the sixties, seventies and eighties, songs featuring live strings, over 100 recorded tracks and interpolations of both the Beach Boys and The Pretenders. The band claimed that the goal of Version 2.0 was to create a rapprochement between the "high-tech and low-down, the now sound and of golden memories".

Release, tour and success


The Version 2.0 campaign officially began on March 16, 1998 when "Push It" debuted on UK radio , being A-listed at Radio One, Virgin, XFM and GLR, reaching #20 in the UK Airplay chart. "Push It" was released in the US on March 30 and became the #1 most added record at Alternative Radio. Modern rock outlet KROQ was one of several US stations to jump the add date for "Push It" despite cease and desist orders from Almo Sounds. On April 11, "Push It" debuted on the Hot 100 Airplay chart at #72. The promotional video for "Push it" debuted on April 16.

On April 21, "Push It" was released as a limited edition single in the US , enabling it to debut at #52 on the May 9 Hot 100 chart. The UK saw a commercial release for "Push It" on April 27, when Mushroom issued the single on CD, casette and for one week only a collectible 3"CD in a blister pack as a limited edition of 5,000. "Push It" shot into the UK top ten at #9 in its first week on sale.

On May 4, Version 2.0 was released in Japan a week early to counteract parallel imports, as a standard album (with bonus "Push It" remix ) and as a limited edition of 20,000 featuring two bonus tracks. . It debuts at #4 in the Japanese album chart.

Version 2.0 was released worldwide on May 11 (May 12 in North America). It debuts in the album top tens worldwide including at #1 in the UK (32,000 copies in first week sales and is certified gold on May 22 ), Belgium, France and New Zealand. Following on from the success of the debut album in Australia, Version 2.0 charts at #5. In the US, Version 2.0 ships gold its first week out and debuts at #13 in the Billboard 200 with sales of 88,000.

Garbage began touring Version 2.0 on May 15 at Ryan's Ballroom in Combined Locks, Wisconsin performing and debuting tracks from the album under the alias Stupid Girl. The band performs a further two shows in Champaign and Grand Rapids under their alias name , before officially beginning the Version 2.0 tour as Garbage on May 20 at San Francisco's Warfield Theater.

Garbage took to Europe from June 1 to join the festival circuit, as well as perform a number of their own headline shows, backing up their next single release for "I Think I'm Paranoid". . The single was preempted by performances on Nulle Part Ailleurs , Top of The Pops and two TFI Friday shows. Like its predecessor, "I Think I'm Paranoid" was A-listed at Radio 1 and XFM , reaching #14 on airplay charts, and was released in the UK on July 6, and debuted at #9 the following Sunday, becoming Garbage's fourth UK top ten hit in a row. On the same day (July 12), Garbage completed their European tour with a "homecoming" slot at Scotland's T In The Park festival. .

As "I Think I'm Paranoid" was released across Europe as Version 2.0 received its first certifications. The album was certified gold in both Belgium (sales in excess of 25,000) and Hong Kong (sales in excess of 10,000). On July 14, the video for "Push It" was nominated for eight MTV Video Music Awards (for 'Best Group Video', 'Best Alternative Video', 'Best Breakthrough Video', 'Best Art Direction', 'Best Editing', 'Best Cinematography', 'Best Direction' and 'Best Special Effects' ) coming second to Madonna's "Ray of Light" video which received nine. In the US, "I Think I'm Paranoid" debuted on August 15 on the Hot 100 Airplay; it eventually peaked at #70. During August downtime, Garbage recorded a new track "13x Forever" and an acoustic version of "Medication", played a handful of shows in Japan, Canada, US, and UK, as well as a number of performances of "Special" for TFI Friday, Top of The Pops and both "Special" and "When I Grow Up" for Pepsi Chart Show. On August 26, Manson's 32nd birthday, the band shot a video for "Special" in London. "Special" is A-listed at XFM and Radio One, B-listed at Virgin and issued across Europe on October 5, with an Australian release three weeks later. "Special" peaks at #15 in the UK single chart, while the Brothers in Rhythm remixes reach #6 in the Buzz chart.

On October 1, Garbage were nominated for three MTV Europe Music Awards: "Best Group," "Best Rock Act" and "Best Video" for "Push It". By this time, Version 2.0 has been certified platinum in Canada, New Zealand, Singapore and the UK and further been certified gold in Australia, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the US.

Garbage's two-month headline North American tour in support of Version 2.0 kicked off on September 17 in Denver with Girls Against Boys supporting. During this period "Special" was sent to Modern Rock (and a remix to Urban radio), and on October 15 to promote their first live webcast from Dallas, released their first digital single "Driving Lesson", through, which registered 6,000 downloads. Garbage perform "Special" on Late Show with David Letterman, and the following day perform "#1 Crush" on The Howard Stern Show. Garbage follow up televised promotion with a in-sudio performance for MusiquePlus, record new track "Tornado" on their portable Pro-Tools rig, and shoot live footage for "When I Grow Up" and "The Trick Is To Keep Breathing" videos at Madison, Indianapolis and St. Louis shows, before the tour wraps up on Nov 28 in Green Bay.

From November 29, Garbage immediately promote Version 2.0 on a month-long radio show circuit starting at Madison's WMAD for Modern Rock Live and on for a further twelve US radio shows. On December 11, Garbage perform "Special" on The Tonight Show, and then December 13 cut the red ribbon at the grand opening of Tower Records in Mexico City in front of their headline show there, their last for 1998. December 20 marks the final radio show in Detroit.

Version 2.0 ends the year named Daily Mail's Album of the Year, and is in end-of-year lists in The Guardian, Q, Kerrang!, Melody Maker, NME, Select, Spin and Gear. Canada's largest modern rock station, The Edge 102 named Version 2.0 #1 Album, while three tracks make Australia's Triple J Hottest 100: "I Think I'm Paranoid" (at #57), "Push It" (#87) and "Special" (#89).


On January 5, 1999, Version 2.0 is nominated for Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Album. A radio remix of "Special" is sent to Top 40 radio and on January 26 is #1 most added single at Top 40 radio with 53 adds.

Garbage begin a European Arena tour on January 14 in Dublin, supported by the fourth single release "When I Grow Up" (or "The Trick Is To Keep Breathing" in some territories). In the UK, "When I Grow Up" is A-listed by XFM, Radio One, GLR and Atlantic 252, while KISS FM playlists the Danny Tenaglia remix and television exposure comes from heavy rotation on The Box, and live performances on The Ian Wright Show and Top of The Pops. The single is released on January 25 and peaks at #9.

MTV records the band's January 27 Paris show for a MTV: Live special, and on January 28, the band perform "Special" and "The Trick Is To Keep Breathing" on Nulle Part Ailleurs. The February 4 show in Tallinn is cancelled when tour equipment is held at the Russia / Estonia border, and the tour wraps up in Madrid on February 11. "The Trick Is To Keep Breathing" is released as a maxi-single on February 15.

Garbage return to North America supporting Alanis Morissette on her US tour beginning February 16 in Cincinnati. In between shows on the tour, Garbage film a video for "You Look So Fine", record two new tracks, complete a remix trade with Fun Lovin' Criminals, perform "Special" and "When I Grow Up" on Saturday Night Live, and "Special" for the second time on The Tonight Show, and are interviewed on Charlie Rose and The Late Late Show. On April 12, "When I Grow Up" is released to Modern Rock radio just after the tour finishes in Los Angeles on April 7.

By this break in the tour, Version 2.0 has now been certified double gold in France, platinum in Ireland, US and double platinum the UK. On the week of March 8, Version 2.0 was officially awarded the European Platinum Award by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry for 1 million sales across Europe. "Push It" was nominated for Best Alternative Record at Winter Music Conference.

Garbage regrouped to begin a European festival circuit tour on May 19 in Vienna, interspersed with performances on Later With Jools Holland, Top of The Pops, TFI Friday and Radio One Live Session for the May 24 release of "You Look So Fine", which features the Fun Lovin' Criminals version on the B-side (Garbage's remix of their single "Korean Bodeag" was released the previously on April 26, reaching #15 in the UK chart). "You Look So Fine" is A-listed at XFM, GLR and Capital, B-listed at Radio One and C-listed at Virgin, and reaches #19 in the UK singles chart. Following the release of the single, and to coincide with European dates, Version 2.0 is re-issued in Europe and Japan with a second disc with four live tracks.

Garbage perform "You Look So Fine" for Gala Ragazza in Madrid on June 3 as Version 2.0 is certified platinum in Spain. "When I Grow Up" is licensed to the Big Daddy soundtrack, a new video filmed for it, and on June 15 pop radio remixes are sent to Top 40 radio in the US. On June 20, Version 2.0 claims the fifth longest chart run on the Spanish Album Charts, and an airplay-only single, "Temptation Waits" is released to Spanish radio.

Garbage return to headline a 'homecoming' concert in Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh, on July 1 to celebrate the opening of the Scottish Parliament, and continue on until July 25's final show Duisburg, before four South African headline dates in Johannesburg and Cape Town. On August 4, Garbage are officially confirmed performing the theme for James Bond movie The World Is Not Enough and during August and September, Garbage work with David Arnold in London and Vancouver on theme "The World Is Not Enough, and film its promotional video as well as complete two new tracks for a proposed B-sides and remix album. On September 9, the video for "Special" wins 'Best Special Effects' but loses out 'Best Art Direction' at MTV Video Music Awards.

On October 1, Garbage head to Australia and New Zealand to co-headline a tour with Alanis Morissette. After performing "When I Grow Up" on Hey Hey It's Saturday, it peaks at #22 and spends three months in the top 40, becoming the band's most successful single in Australia. The Version 2.0 bonus live disc repackage is issued to coincide with the live dates. The Australian tour ends in Newcastle, on October 16.

On October 4, "The World Is Not Enough" debuts on radio, and on November 1, perform the song on The Late Show with David Letterman. Garbage start the last leg of the Version 2.0 tour, headlining the MTV Campus Invasion tour on October 15 in Denver. The tour finished on November 24 in Irvine.

"The World Is Not Enough" is released as a single across Europe from November 15 through December 6. "The World Is Not Enough" reaches the top 10s in Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Finland, #11 in the UK, as well as the top 40 in Turkey, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In Australia, "You Look So Fine" is released as the final single from Version 2.0 instead. By this point, Version 2.0 has surpassed the worldwide sales of the debut album.


"Special" received Grammy nominations for Best Rock Song and for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group. Following the success of "The World Is Not Enough", BMG re-issued "When I Grow Up" in Europe on February 14, 2000.

Version 2.0's sales continued into 2000, and was certified platinum in the UK for the second time on February 11, 2000, before re-charting in the UK for the final time week-ending July 15, 2000.

Remixes, B-sides and unreleased tracks

Garbage's record labels successfully achieved club and radio support for Version 2.0 through multiple remixes of its singles. All five international singles were remixed, with new versions coming back from Boom Boom Satellites and Victor Calderone ("Push It"); The Crystal Method and Jill Stark ("I Think I'm Paranoid"); Brothers In Rhythm ("Special"); Danny Tenaglia ("When I Grow Up") and Eric Kupper ("You Look So Fine"). An Urban radio remix of "Special" was also completed by Rickidy Raw. Fun Lovin' Criminals recorded a lounge version of "You Look So Fine" featuring a brand new vocal from Shirley Manson; while Garbage returned the favour by remixing their "Korean Bodega". Remixes by both Eli Janney ("Hammering In My Head") and Asian Dub Foundation ("I Think I'm Paranoid") were rejected by either Garbage or their A&R. Garbage themselves completed alternative versions of both "Special" and "When I Grow Up" for radio and an acoustic version of "Medication".

A number of tracks written during the sessions for Version 2.0 but not included on the final album were released as bonus cuts on the groups international singles. These tracks were "Lick The Pavement", "Afterglow" and "Deadwood", which had at one point been in the running for the album. Garbage also covered "Thirteen" by Big Star for release as a single B-side. In August 1998, "13x Forever" was written and recorded, as well as a second cover version, of The Seeds' "Can't Seem To Make You Mine". Further tracks written during the Version 2.0 period were completed on the road, including "Tornado", recorded on Garbage's tour bus in November 1998, and both "Soldier Through This" and "Get Busy With The Fizzy" recorded in Los Angeles in February 1999.

One track, "King of Crime", was scrapped near the end of writing for Version 2.0. Elements of the song were incorporated into "You Look So Fine".

In August 1999, when Garbage were completing production and remix work on "The World Is Not Enough", two new tracks were written, "Silence Is Golden" and "'Til The Day I Die" intended for release on a planned B-sides album. The former track was performed on the last leg of the Version 2.0 tour. The B-sides album was put on the backburner, and both songs were re-recorded and included on 2001's Beautiful Garbage.

In the years since Version 2.0 was first released, the album has been repackaged and reissued a number of times, often due to a changes in record label or local distributer. In almost all cases, labels which the album was licensed to reissued the album with updated crediting, resulting in small changes to the album sleeve, credits and catalogue numbering.

From 1999 Australian pressings were re-issued on parent Mushroom Records following the dissolution of the White label. On November 29, 1999 Simply Vinyl issued a limited 180 g/m² double vinyl edition of the album (following a similar release for Garbage).

In 2001, prior to the release of third album beautifulgarbage, Mushroom UK ended its distribution deal with BMG (with the exception of in Eastern Europe, Russia and CIS ) and began business with Play It Again Sam for territories in Western Europe. In South Africa, PIAS licensed the album to David Gresham Records (taking over from BMG). In Japan and Asia FMR, with whom Mushroom had merged with Festival to form, licensed the album out to Sony Music Int'l to release (again, taking over from BMG). Garbage's North American parent company Universal picked up distribution from BMG for all South American business through their local labels.

From November 24, 2003 WEA International took on all pressing and distribution for all non-American pressings of Version 2.0. This arrangement eventually included Australia, where FMR became a Warners label in 2005.
