The phrase "dirty thirty" has been applied to a list of thirty corporations that the Japanese government saved from bankruptcy when an economic bubble burst in the early 1990s Payments on the bad loans to these corporations was estimated to consume a tenth, or more, of the Japanese Gross National Product.
