Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory

The Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory (DEBEL) is an Indian defense laboratory of the Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO). Located in Bangalore, its main function is the research and development of technologies and products in the area of Life support, medical and physiological protection systems for the Indian Armed Forces. DEBEL is organized under the Life Sciences Directorate of DRDO. The present director of DEBEL is Dr. V.C. Padaki.

History

DEBEL was formed in April 1982 by bringing together the Aero Bioengineering Unit (ABEU) of ADE and the Electromedical Instrumentation Division (EMID) of LRDE, located nearby. Since 17 June 1994, the laboratory has been functioning from its own independent premises located at the ADE campus.

Today DEBEL is one of the few DRDO laboratories dedicated to both R & D work for the Services and also spin off use to the civilian population.
