DAVIDS

Davids' Psalter

Davids' Psalter (Polish Psałterz Dawidów) by Jan Kochanowski, the most prominent Polish poet of the Renaissance, is one of the greatest pieces of Polish literature and of the Polish language. It was printed in 1579 in Kraków, in the printing-house of Lazarus.

Kochanowski, like many of his contemporaries in Western Europe used Latin translation of The Book of Psalms as a basis of his poetical opus. Being expert on the ancient Classics, he combined the biblical spirit of the original with some artistic achievements of Greek and Latin authors.

The work of Kochanowski gained recognition of both Polish Protestants and Catholics, making also some echoes abroad, notably in the work of Moldavian Metropolitan Dosoftei. Some of the Psalms are still used in Poland during a Mass.
