Malhação is a Brazilian telenovela for the teenage audience. The soap started in 1995, and was set in a fictional Gym Club called Malhação on Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. Through the years the location varied slightly. Although the name of the soap remains the same, it is now set in the Múltipla Escolha (Portuguese for "Multiple Choice") College.
Malhação is very popular in Portugal (known as New Wave, broadcast on SIC). The show inspired others soaps, like TVI's Morangos com Açúcar, which is strongly based on the Malhação format, and Rede Record's Alta Estação.
The show reached its peak in 2004, with Guilherme Berenguer and Juliana Didone as the leads, and the ratings decreased from this season on. In 2005 and 2006, Malhação lost a huge part of its fanbase to the Mexican teen soap Rebelde, airing at SBT. Malhação used the technique Cold open by the end of 2007.
Criticism
The soap is criticized because it does not reflect accurately the 1990s and 2000s Brazilian generation. It is also criticized because the education system displayed in the soap is unrealistic, compared to the Brazilian reality. Another complaint is that the standard of living shown in Malhação is available only to few Brazilians.
Even middle-class and rich teenagers can't relate to the characters, and some of the main girls have been accused by fans of following the
Mary Sue stereotype.
