(Until 1962, clockwise)
1 Although the whole of Cyprus became part of the European Union on 1 May 2004, the EU's acquis communautaire only applies to the southern part of the island which is under the effective control of the internationally recognised Republic of Cyprus. Northern Cyprus has been outside the control of the Republic of Cyprus since the Turkish invasion of 1974 and is therefore de facto not part of the EU. The 2004 Annan Plan for Cyprus which sought to reunify the island before EU accession was accepted by Turkish Cypriots but rejected by Greek Cypriots.
2 French Guiana and Guadeloupe are French overseas departments (since 2003 also additionally overseas regions) and as such are fully part of France and the EU. Until 2007, Saint Martin was administered from Guadeloupe and, therefore, the Netherlands Antilles bordered the European Union here. Saint Martin, while no longer part of a French overseas department, remains part of the EU.
