FISU University Winter Games (Universiade) will be held in 2009 in Harbin, China. (2009 Winter Universiade)

Canada

In Canada, University curling is played in a variety of levels. The CIS is sactioning the 2008 Canadian University Curling Championships. The winners of this event will move on to the 2009 FISU Winter Universiade in Harbin, China. Currently, not every athletic conference offers curling as a varsity sport.

2008 CIS Curling Championship

CIS and the CCA combined to host the first national curling championship hosted by U of Waterloo. It was held from March 12 to 16, 2008 at the Guelph Curling Club and Elora Curling Club. http://universitysport.ca/e/championships/curling/2008/index.cfm

In the inaugural event the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks took both the men's and women's titles.

In men's play the top teams after pool play were:

  4. Queen's Golden Gaels
  5. Calgary Dinos

In women's play the top teams after pool play were:

  1. Brock Badgers
  2. Manitoba Bisons
  3. St. Mary's Huskies
  4. Laurentian Lady Vees
  5. Alberta Pandas

In the end the Golden Hawks swept to victory in both division. Especially impressive were the female Hawks who started out 0-3 and then won 7 in a row to claim victory.

2009 CIS Curling Championships

The 2009 CIS championships will be held from 26 February to 1 March, 2009 at McGill University in Montreal.

Ontario University Athletics

Currently, the only conference with a curling championship is the OUA. Other member schools can apply directly to get to the national tournament. The OUA offers curling championships in Men's and Women's divisions.

Canadian Colleges Athletics Association
