The system was developed in the 1970s for the South African Defence Force.
Chubby consists of three vehicles:
The Meerkat is the lead vehicle of the Chubby system or Mine Detection Vehicle (MDV). This rear wheel drive vehicle is a mine detecting vehicle with mine detecting pans.
See also Meerkat (vehicle)
The Husky is a towing mine detection vehicle (T/MDV). The 4 X 4 vehicle is a combination of a tractor and grader like plow and detecting pans. It is used to pull the Duisendpoot trailers.
The Duisendpoot is a mine-detonating trailer set (MDT). It will detonate any mines not detected by the Meerkat and Husky.
This mobile set consists of a spare wheel module (front and rear axles, steering gear, wheels and propshafts), towing frame, loose spares (spare detector heads, lifing equipment)
This set consists of secondary parts (spare engine and major maintenance parts) for all three vehicles.
