In the 2006 elections to the state assembly, Anwarul Haque of CPI(M)
won the Chopra seat defeating his nearest rival Hamidul Rahman of INC
. In 2001, Hamidul Rahman, Independent, defeated Akbar Ali of CPI(M). Mohamuddin of CPI(M) defeated Hamidul Rahman of INC in 1996, Choudhury Md. Manjur Afaque of INC in 1991 and Sheikh Jalauddin Ahmed of INC in 1987. Mohammad Bacha Munshi of CPI(M) defeated Sheikh Jalauddin of INC in 1982, and Narayan Chandra Sinha of INC in 1977.
