Chopra, Uttar Dinajpur

Chopra (চোপড়া) is a community development block, police station and an assembly constituency in North Dinajpur district in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Demographics

In the 2001 census, Chopra community development bloc had a population of 223,046, of which 115,244 were males and 107,802 were females. Decadal growth for the period 1991 to 2001 was 34.59% in Chopra, against 28.72 in Uttar Dinajpur district.Decadal growth in West Bengal was 17.84%.

Politics

In the 2006 elections to the state assembly, Anwarul Haque of CPI(M) won the Chopra seat defeating his nearest rival Hamidul Rahman of INC. In 2001, Hamidul Rahman, Independent, defeated Akbar Ali of CPI(M). Mohamuddin of CPI(M) defeated Hamidul Rahman of INC in 1996, Choudhury Md. Manjur Afaque of INC in 1991 and Sheikh Jalauddin Ahmed of INC in 1987. Mohammad Bacha Munshi of CPI(M) defeated Sheikh Jalauddin of INC in 1982, and Narayan Chandra Sinha of INC in 1977.

Chopra is part of Darjeeling (Lok Sabha constituency).
