History

Since opening in 1964, with the three founding Faculties of Science, Social Sciences, and Humanities, CMU have continued to augment our structure and organization in terms of premises, the range of disciplines offered, and student enrollment. Today, CMU has seventeen Faculties with 107 individual departments, and a Graduate School. Currently it offers a total of 253 programs: 3 Certificate Programs, 87 undergraduate programs and 163 postgraduate and graduate diploma programs, to more than twenty-five thousand students. In addition, two international Bachelors program and 18 international Masters and Doctoral programs, taught in English language, are presently being offered to international students by Social Sciences, Health Sciences, and Science and Technology faculties.

Internationally, faculty and department levels, CMU have 146 Collaborative Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding with foreign universities, institutes and international organizations in 27 countries. Projects and programs covered by these Agreements and Memoranda include: academic collaboration, the secondment of thesis advisors and project consultants, joint research, faculty staff and student exchange, curriculum development, joint seminars, and information exchange.

Campuses

CMU have three campuses in Chiang Mai and one in Lamphun, which together cover about of land.

The main University campus, Suan Sak campus (สวนสัก), also known as Cherng Doi (เชิงดอย), lies about 5 kilometres west of the city center. Set against the backdrop of Doi Suthep mountain, the campus occupies a site, bounded on three sides by busy shopping streets and on the fourth by Chiang Mai Zoo. Here you will find the University’s administrative centre, the Science, Engineering, Humanities, and Social Sciences faculties, the Graduate School, all of the Campus Resource Facilities and Services and our major sports facilities. An attractive feature of this campus is the Ang Kaew Reservoir. Constructed to supply water for the University, it also provides an idyllic recreational area for both campus residents and the local community.

In the 1960s, this area was still ancient forest so, with conservation in mind, the University buildings were constructed between the trees, with the result that the campus is now a tranquil, verdant environment, resplendent with mature trees and lush vegetation. There are probably as many trees on the campus as there are students.

Still within the main campus, but a little closer to the city, the Health Sciences complex, the Suan Dok campus (สวนดอก), occupies a site. Here you will find the Faculties of Medicine, Associated Medical Sciences, Nursing, Dentistry and Pharmacy, and Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, known locally as Suan Dok, the largest teaching hospital in Northern Thailand.

About 5 km south of the main campus, the Mae Hea campus (แม่เหียะ) is home to the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine and Agro-Industry.

The University’s latest acquisition is the Si Bua Ban campus (ศรีบัวบาน). Located in Amphoe Mueang Lamphun, Lamphun Province, about 55 kilometres south of Chiang Mai, on a site close to the Lamphun industrial centre. Most of area of the campus is hills and forests. The campus is currently under development. When complete, it will provide additional training and research facilities for the Faculties of Nursing, Architecture, Engineering, Humanities, Social Sciences, Agro-Industries, Agriculture, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine, Science, and the Graduate School.

Autonomous Organizations

On August 23, 2003, the Chiang Mai University Council, as part of the proceedings of its sixth meeting, decided to establish the Language Institute as an autonomous organization under supervision of the university. It was decided that the main role of the Language Institute, CMU would be the development of foreign languages, learning potentials, and the overall communicative skills of its students and staff and the wider community.

TEFL training is available for students from around the globe as of July, 2008. This certification is available via distance learning through the CMU-LI online school
