Charo Santos-Concio

Maria Rosario Santos known as Charo Santos-Concio or Charo Santos is a Filipina television executive, host, actress, and film producer currently hosts the network's longest-running drama anthology Maalaala Mo Kaya. She is currently the President of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation, and plays a powerful role in TV and film production in the Philippines. On March 3, 2008, Ms. Charo Santos-Concio had been promoted as 5th president of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp.and in charge of the company's total business portfolio, taking over from interim president Eugenio Lopez III

Career

Charo is the daughter of Dr.Winifredo Santos and Nora Navarro. She is the second of 6 children with eldest sister Suzanne, Millette [wife of comedian/actor/writer/director Edgar Mortiz], Mae, Malou [Head of Star Cinema), and younger brother Joey.

Charo Santos was first noticed by the media as Baron Travel Girl in 1976. She also worked as a production assistant with a pre-martial law ABS-CBN. But it was in the movies where Charo would make her mark.

She established herself as an award-winning dramatic actress early in her career, winning the trophy for her haunting performance in Mike de Leon’s ‘ITIM’ during the 1977 Asian Film Festival. She was critically acclaimed for her performance in Lino Brocka’s 1990 film "Gumapang Ka Sa Lusak" which won several awards including a Best Director FAMAS for Brocka. On her own, Santos has won four FAMAS Award (Philippine equivaent of the Oscars) nominations. She has two Best Actress nominations for Pag-Ibig na Walang Dangal (1980) and Kontrobersiyal (1981) and Best Supporting Actress nominations for Gumapang Ka Sa Lusak (1990) and Ms. Dolora X (1993). She also earned two Gawad Urian nominations for Gumapang... and Itim.

In the 80s, Charo made her mark as producer of modern classics ORO, PLATA MATA and HIMALA under the Experimental Cinema of the Philippines. She also served as the creative force behind the productions of Vanguard Films and Vision Films before moving to Regal Films where she put her mark on some of the companies biggest commercial successes.

In 1987, while working for Regal Films, she was invited to join the new ABS-CBN, which had re-opened in September 1986. Santos-Concio worked her way up from Production Manager, to Program Director to Executive Vice-President. During this time, she has been credited with creating several of ABS-CBN’s including HOME ALONG THE RILES, ESPERANZA and PANGAKO SA ‘YO. Her film background played an important role in the creation of STAR CINEMA which is responsible for such memorable films as DEKADA 70, MADRASTA, SUKOB, KASAL KASALI KASALO, TANGING YAMAN, CAREGIVER and Anak. She is also the brains behind the most successful and longest-running TV drama anthology program Maalaala Mo Kaya, which she has hosted since it premiered in 1993.

Last December 26, 2007, the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) announced the winners of the 25th anniversary presentation of the Luna Award before the actual awards night at the Club Filipino, San Juan City on December 27. ABS-CBN's Charo Santos-Concio and Solar Entertainment's Wilson Y. Tieng won the Manuel de Leon Award. The Lamberto Avellana Memorial Award will be given posthumously to Manuel Conde and Vic Silayan.

She took an advanced management course at Harvard University in 2007. On March 01, 2008, she was appointed as the 5th President of ABS-CBN, making her the first woman president of the media conglomerate and the Lopez Group of Companies.

She is married to businessman Cesar Rafael Concio, Jr. and has two sons, Francis and Martin.
