The company was founded on 1 March 2000 and has its headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. Its shareholders include Amuse Capital, Tokuma Shoten, Tohokushinsha Film Corporation, Nippon Television Network Corporation, Tokyo FM Broadcasting, Mitsubishi Corporation, and Hayao Nakayama.

cavia usually develops games for already existing franchises, like Naruto, Dragon Ball Z, One Piece or Ghost in the Shell for various publishers. The company also developed its own franchise with Drakengard and Drakengard 2, which where published by Square Enix. They have also developed Bullet Witch for Xbox 360 which was published by AQ Interactive in Japan and Atari in Europe and the US. AQ Interactive became cavia's main publisher in 2005. They are also responsible for the games Beat Down: Fists of Vengeance for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox and Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles for the Wii.

cavia is working on the Xbox 360 action role-playing game, Cry On, under the supervision of Mistwalker.
