Cathal Brugha Street (Sráid Chathal Brugha in Irish) is a street on the northside of Dublin, Ireland.
Location
The street runs eastward from the northern end of O'Connell Street (near Parnell Square), and runs 250 yards eastwards. It intersects Marlborough Street, and runs to to the junction of Sean MacDermott Street and Lower Gardiner Street.Naming and pronunciation
Originally known as Gregg Lane, the street was renamed in the 1920s as Cathal Brugha Street after Cathal Brugha (1874–1922), one of the leaders of the Irish War of Independence. He was killed in O'Connell Street during the Irish Civil War.Landmarks
The area was extensively damaged during the civil war. One of the landmark buildings is St. Thomas Church of Ireland church. The church's building on Marlborough Street was destroyed in the Civil War, and the new building (designed by W. Hicks) was built on a new site created by the remodelling of streets. The building was winner of the RIAI Gold Medal for Architecture 1932-34.The street is best known as the location of Dublin Institute of Technology's College of Catering, which is widely referred to simply as "Cathal Brugha Steet".
