The
General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters was published in
1864 by
John Herschel. It was combined with other observations to produce the
New General Catalogue in the
1880s by
J. L. E. Dreyer. The
GC catalogued
nebulae, contained 5,000 entries, half of the observations by father
William Herschel, half by son John. Later, a complementary edition of the catalog was published posthumously as the
General Catalogue of 10,300 Multiple and Double Stars.
