unincorporated community in
San Diego County,
California,
United States. The Crest
census-designated place (CDP) had a population of 2,716 at the 2000 census.
Geography
Crest is located on a hill east of
El Cajon. According to the
USGS it is located at (32.8072739 -116.8680800). According to the
United States Census Bureau Crest is located at (32.805918, -116.867405), approximately 500 feet to the southeast of the USGS location. The CDP has a total area of 16.5
km² (6.4
mi²), all land. Mail sent to Crest is addressed to El Cajon, California.
Demographics
As of the
census of 2000, there were 2,716 people, 964 households, and 746 families residing in the CDP. The
population density was 164.4/km² (425.4/mi²). There were 999 housing units at an average density of 60.5/km² (156.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 92.89%

Asian, 0.26%
Pacific Islander, 1.88% from
other races, and 3.13% from two or more races.
Hispanic or
Latino of any race were 7.84% of the population.
There were 964 households out of which 36.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.3% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.6% were non-families. 16.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 29.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 102.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $56,728, and the median income for a family was $60,852. Males had a median income of $50,293 versus $35,610 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,890. About 5.2% of families and 9.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 4.4% of those age 65 or over.
Crest has 3 churches (two Protestant and one Catholic), a library, an elementary school, and two convenience stores.
History
The name
Crest is actually the result of the combination of the previously named La Cresta (in the northern part of the community), and Suncrest (in the southern part of the community).
Crest was twice devastated by
wildfires: first by the
Laguna Fire in 1970 then again by the
Cedar Fire in 2003.
Gregory Peck once owned a summer home in Crest.
Politics
In the
state legislature Crest is located in the 36th
Senate District, represented by
Republican Dennis Hollingsworth, and in the 77th
Assembly District, represented by Republican
Joel Anderson. Federally, Crest is located in
California's 52nd congressional district, which has a
Cook PVI of R +9 and is represented by Republican
Duncan Hunter.
