Dorey was born in East Fremantle, Western Australia. He started his cricketing career playing for the Western Australian Under-17 and Under-19 sides. He later backpacked around Europe for two and half years. During this time he had an injury while snowboarding which nearly ruined his career. He moved to England, where he served as a bodyguard for the child of a Russian businessman.
On his return to Australia he renewed his cricket career. After playing one and a half seasons for Western Australia and taking forty wickets, Dorey was selected for the Australian squad to play Sri Lanka and South Africa in the 2006 VB Series. He debuted against South Africa in the Telstra Dome in Melbourne. However, he was dropped from the team midway through the ODI series, and has not been selected since.
