Breakin Dishes

Breakin' Dishes (song)

"Breakin' Dishes" is a song written by Terius "The-Dream" Nash and Christopher "Tricky" Stewart and recorded by pop singer Rihanna. The song was produced by Christopher Stewart, who was also partly responsible for the singer's worldwide smash hit "Umbrella." After several delays as a single, it will officially be the eighth single from Good Girl Gone Bad including the Reloaded edition. All Access has it listed to go for radio adds on CHR/Top 40 on October 7, 2008. The song was performed at many European and Canadian venues during a promotional tour for her album during the summer of 2007. The song is featured in the 2007 film Sydney White and an episode of Bionic Woman.

On September 22, 2008, Def Jam announced that the release of "Breakin' Dishes" as a single had been scrapped.

Music and structure

"Breakin' Dishes" is a moderate techno rock set in the key of B minor. It is written in common time.

Single release

"Breakin' Dishes" was originally set to be released as the fourth single from Good Girl Gone Bad. However, due to the unexpected success of "Don't Stop the Music" at U.S. Top 40 radio, "Breakin' Dishes" was first delayed to the fifth single. Following this, it was decided that the Good Girl Gone Bad album would be re-released, with three new tracks, "Take a Bow", "If I Never See Your Face Again" (with Maroon 5), and "Disturbia" all being released as singles ahead of it. It was finally confirmed by All Access to go for radio adds on October 7, 2008, making it the eighth single from the album.

Rumours have arose that the song will be released in the United Kingdom in December 2008 as the 8th single from the album.

Critical reception

The Boston Globe said that: "Breakin' Dishes" may not convince anyone that Rihanna is much of a threat, but the stuttered phrases and breakbeat handclaps are irresistible. The Observer said that: "Wronged-woman bonanza 'Breakin' Dishes' is a high point, packed with hooks, chants and flashes of lyrical brilliance ('I'm roasting marshmallows on the fire, and what I'm burning is your attire').

Entertainment Weekly stated that "In 'Breakin' Dishes,' Christopher 'Tricky' Stewart (Britney Spears' 'Me Against the Music') provides her with an appropriately frantic romp so she can wax neurotic about a stray man: Is he cheating? Maybe, I don't know, she wonders. I'm looking around for something else to throw. Rolling Stone said that: Great track here. The beat is fierce and so is Rihanna with her lyrics. Rihanna shows attitude on this one, and it is another catchy single.

Urban Review said that: Breakin ' Dishes is a high-tempo, energetic song which, in my opinion, is a highlight of her very likable 3rd album. The track's theme (if you can call it that) is Rihanna getting pretty pissed with her man & starts "Breakin' Dishes". Although Rihanna does not have the vocal ability to match the likes of Beyonce or Mariah, nor the charisma, I find it so hard to hate on her; she is a cool, young woman making some very radio friendly music.

Chart positions

The song did see release to US clubs, and it became very popular, peaking at number 4 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play. Aside from that, the only two countries in which the single has charted are Bulgaria and Portugal. In Bulgaria it peaked at 15 in March 2008 and remained on the charts for 6 weeks.
