Boult, Sir Adrian

Boult, Sir Adrian, 1889-1983, English conductor. Boult studied conducting in Leipzig with Arthur Nikisch (1912-13). In 1930 he became conductor of the newly formed BBC Symphony Orchestra, and he was conductor of the London Philharmonic from 1950 to 1957. Boult led the premieres of many works by British composers and is considered an authoritative interpreter of Elgar and Vaughan Williams. He wrote A Handbook on the Technique of Conducting (1968). Boult was knighted in 1937.

Adrian Brown graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in London, he studied and then worked with Sir Adrian Boult. He is the only British conductor to have reached the finals of the Karajan Conductors' Competition and has conducted the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and the Camerata Salzburg, one of Europe's foremost chamber orchestras. He has also worked with many leading British orchestras including the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Stoneleigh Youth Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta. He has made a great contribution to working with young musicians. He has conducted the National Youth Orchestra, the Senior Orchestra of the Royal Academy of Music and regularly runs courses for young musicians.

Recent engagements have included a Millennium performance of Tippett's Child of our Time, Die Fledermaus and Feuersnot. He was one of a hundred musicians presented with a prestigious Classic FM Award at their 10th Birthday Honours Celebration in June 2002.

Adrian is currently the musical director of the [Stoneleigh Youth Orchestra, a small orchestra located in Surrey, South East England. In July 2007 he took up the post of Music Director of Southgate Symphony Orchestra, an amateur orchestra based in Southgate, Enfield, North London.

Adrian is also an occasional guest conductor with the Suffolk Sinfonia, an orchestra based in Bury St Edmunds in East Anglia.

He attended many camps at Piggots farm in High Wycombe and now conducts the Junior Camp for a weekend every year. In 2008, Elgars Cocainge Overture and Sibelius 1st symphony were performed.
