Bitterfeld, city (1994 pop. 17,030), Saxony-Anhalt district, E Germany, on the Mulde River. It is an industrial center and rail junction, but industrial development has led it to be one of the most polluted cities in Europe. Manufactures include chemicals, aluminum, machinery, and plastics. Lignite is mined in the region. Bitterfeld was founded in the mid-12th cent. and passed to Prussia in 1815.

Bitterfeld (ˈbɪtɐfɛlt) is a town in the district Anhalt-Bitterfeld, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Since 1 July 2007, it is part of the town Bitterfeld-Wolfen. It is situated approx. 25 km south of Dessau, and 30 km northeast of Halle (Saale). During the GDR years, it gained notoriety for its chemical industry complex which caused remarkably severe pollution even for GDR standards. Today it is still largely an industrial town.

Today Bitterfeld stage annually the United Metal Maniacs metal festival.
