Bibles for America (BfA) opened its office in Irvine, California
in the spring of 2000. A group of Christians in southern California met together to pray and fellowship their desire that a modern-language study Bible would be distributed to individuals in southern California. When responses to the free New Testament study Bible offers surpassed initial expectations, a decision was made for BfA to distribute the offers nationwide, with one stated goal of distributing one million copies of the Recovery Version New Testament by the year 2010.
Bibles for America chose to distribute the New Testament Recovery version based on its modern, readable English while retaining the accuracy of translation from the original languages that makes it useful for Bible study.
Interpretive study aids include footnotes that stress matters of biblical truth, Christian experience, and church practice; scriptural cross-references; maps; charts; and outlines for each New Testament book.
Bibles for America depends on the financial support of the Christian public to continue its operations, and relies on volunteers for packing, shipping, and distribution tasks, with a small staff in Irvine, California overseeing the administrative, planning, marketing, distribution, logistics, information technology, and customer service operations.
Bibles for America (BfA) uses several volunteer distribution programs in order to reach interested persons and meet the growing demand for free New Testaments.
Brochures contain information on how to write, call, or use the Internet to request a free New Testament Recovery Version and are available for distribution by interested individuals. Distribution by volunteers is arranged for college campuses and shopping centers as well as in neighborhoods and other public places using BfA display tables to distribute brochures as well as handing out free Bibles.
Mobile distribution programs utilizing a motor home and volunteer crews started in 2001. Additional motor homes have been added to expand the success of the initial mobile distribution and to efficiently cover communities in the United States. Special distribution tours occurred after the events of September 11, 2001 and at the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympics.
Free New Testament offer mailing programs are available to reach rural America and communities where volunteers have not yet visited.
For distribution to Internet users, the Bibles for America website offers an online request form.
In other English-speaking countries, like-minded Christian believers heard about the extraordinary response to the Bibles for America free New Testament distribution program and expressed interest in establishing their own distribution programs to provide free New Testament Recovery Versions. Bibles for New Zealand began its distribution in early 2002; Bibles for Australia started distribution in 2003; Bibles for Canada began distribution of New Testaments in English in late 2006, and now also offer New Testaments in French.
