The Azed crossword appears every Sunday in The Observer newspaper. It is compiled by Jonathan Crowther and has a small but devoted following. Azed succeeded Ximenes in 1971, making his nickname by reversing the name of another Inquisitor, Diego Deza. On the first Sunday of each month and at Christmas, Azed sets a competition puzzle where solvers are required to produce their own clues - normally to a word that is clued by a non-cryptic definition in the puzzle. For each competition Azed produces 'The Azed Slip' commenting on the winning clues and other aspects of the puzzle.
