Avocado Heights is an unincorporated census-designated place in Los Angeles County, California, United States. It is in the San Gabriel Valley near the Puente Hills. North of Avocado Heights is the unincorporated community of Bassett. To the east is the City of Industry. There is a very thin strip of the City of Industry to the south, with the Pomona Freeway and the Puente Hills further south. To the west is the San Gabriel River Freeway and the San Gabriel River. The California Country Club is also on the west side of Avocado Heights. Avocado Heights is approx. 15 miles from the downtown Los Angeles Civic Center. The population was 15,148 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Avocado Heights is located at (34.038610, -118.004575), or about three miles southeast of El Monte.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.3 km² (2.8 mi²). 6.9 km² (2.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (5.32%) is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 15,148 people, 3,758 households, and 3,280 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,190.5/km² (5,675.7/mi²). There were 3,839 housing units at an average density of 555.1/km² (1,438.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 51.43% White, 1.47% Black or African American, 1.16% Native American, 9.12% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 33.06% from other races, and 3.66% from two or more races. 77.74% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 3,758 households out of which 45.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.0% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 12.7% were non-families. 9.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 4.00 and the average family size was 4.16.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 30.9% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 8.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.5 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $48,712, and the median income for a family was $48,939. Males had a median income of $30,837 versus $26,481 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $14,570. About 13.2% of families and 16.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.0% of those under age 18 and 9.8% of those age 65 or over.

Politics

In the state legislature Avocado Heights is located in the 24th Senate District, represented by Democrat Gloria Romero, and in the 57th Assembly District, represented by Democrat Edward P. Hernandez. Federally, Avocado Heights is located in California's 38th congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of D +20 and is represented by Democrat Grace Napolitano.
