Arthur St. John Ryan (b.1937) is the founder of Penneys, an Irish clothing retailer (known in the UK and Spain as Primark).
He is currently the chairman and managing director. He is an intensely private man and as a consequence very little is known about him.
He is married to Alma Carroll, a singer who finished third in the Eurovision song contest in 1977. Ryan worked for Carr & McDonald a fashion wholesaler in London, then for Dunnes Stores in Dublin. He opened the first Penneys shop on Mary Street in Dublin in 1969.
